Most intubations will be possible with a first best attempt WITHOUT a cricothyroidotomy. However remember oxygenation is essential and intubation before arrest is key to achieve that endpoint. Max had 3 attempts at intubation separated by minutes AFTER arrest before cricothyroidotomy was performed late. We elected to show how quickly this decision needs to be made in hypoxic peri-arrest situations.

It was produced by Tamara and Ben McKenzie with a dedicated team of real critical care clinicians (consultants and registrars) to demonstrate, in real-time, the implementation of the AMAX4 algorithm in treatment of hypoxic anaphylaxis and asthma.

Using paramedic monitoring, IV cannula and understanding clinical priorities are important to maintaining treatment momentum during handover from paraemdic to hospital teams and are essential in hypoxic crises.
